Newport School Board and district officials are looking for ways to cut back on a proposed 4.8 budget increase for the 2014-2015 school year. Although the preliminary budget needs final figures, costs for out of district special education transportation shows an increase of over one hundred and twenty thousand dollars. Twenty seven percent of Newport’s Students are currently in special education programs. Business Administrator Charles Stewart said the proposed budget will be adjusted between the School Board and Budget Advisory Committee. He also said he expects the figure will be much lower than the 4.8 percent when the final budget is presented in January. The school board meets on December 17 with the Budget Advisory Committee time to be announced.
