Prison and correctional Facilities are preparing for the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) audit in January. The law passed under President George W. Bush in 2003 but it wasn’t until late 2012 the final adoption of national standards were approved. The law applies to Offender-on-offender sexual assault and abuse, Staff-on-offender sexual misconduct, and Offender-on-offender and staff-on-offender sexual harassment. Ross Cunningham, Superintendent of Sullivan County Corrections says it’s about keeping a safe environment. According to Cunningham Sullivan County is on target with the requirements. The facility allows the auditor to enter and tour lockups, review documents, and interview staff and detainees, as deemed appropriate by the auditor.
