Claremont Rep John Cloutier of Claremont who serves on the Public Works and Highway Committee is sponsoring a bill that would rebuild and reopen the Vilas Bridge between Walpole NH and Bellows Falls VT. Cloutier talked with Bellows Falls village trustees on Tuesday night and explained that VT would need to pay half of the cost for the bridge rebuilding, despite NH being financially responsible for bridges between the two states. “We just can’t do business as usual,” Cloutier said explaining that the States Highway Department is financially drained. Cloutier said the trustees will take it under consideration. The bridge was presented to both states by Charles Nathaniel Vilas a native of Alstead NH in 1931 of as a symbol of friendship between the states and has been closed since 2009. Before it closed 4,600 vehicles crossed the bridge daily.
