Newport can expect a $1.57 tax increase per thousand on their next tax bill, said Town Manager Paul Brown at Monday’s Select Board meeting. According to the calculations .37 cents of the increase is from town appropriations from the road project that voters passed at the Town Meeting. The additional $1.25 is from school appropriation. Charles Stewart, Business Administrator for Newport School District said on Tuesday, he expects the school appropriations will be much lower and close to level funding. Stewart explained that in September he used estimated holding numbers, since he does not received real figures back from the State until later in the fall, and the current figures does not show such a dramatic increase. Stewart is sending in a new numbers to the State on Friday.
