The rainbow reveals the petroleum contamination

Over 6,000 tons of petroleum contaminated soil is being removed from the old Johnson and Dix Bulk lot at 64 and 71 Belknap Avenue in Newport. The parcel came to the attention of NH Department of Environmental Services in 1998 and has been a source of contaminating ground water. After the contaminated soil is removed it will be replaced with clean soil and the old earth will be go to Bethlehem NH, for landfill covering. The project is expected to last through December and the cost is estimated at over $800,000. It is being funded through a State of New Hampshire petroleum reimbursement fund. The property is currently owned by AM and TM Properties LLC of Elkins NH.
