It was a little over a year ago that Violette’s reopened on South Main Street in Newport and on Monday night the Associated Grocers of New England (AGNE) decided to liquidate the store’s food stock. Violette’s employees learned they would be without a job at 7:30 pm on Monday, and Tuesday morning AGNE officials brought in their own staff for a 50 percent off liquidation sale. Area consumers flocked into the store for the bargain prices, some making more than one trip and waiting in long lines with several carts. Selectman Gary Nichols was shocked when he learned about the closing during work on Tuesday and expressed regrets calling the Violette’s caring community minded people. Ella Casey Chair of the Newport Chamber of Commerce blames the closing on lack of support of local residents. See related story here.
