Newport’s Conservation Committee Tables Vote on Ash Land Fill Easement

ruger logoA vote on modifying the conservation easement for the ash landfill on John Stark Highway by the Newport Conservation Committee has been tabled until Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 6 pm. The meeting will contain a presentation and give the public a chance to comment. The easement modification was requested by the Newport Board of Selectmen and Economic Development Corporation of Newport (ECON) after Town Manager and ECON President Paul Brown approached Sturm Ruger about putting a gun range at the old ash fill facility. Brown sees this as an opportunity to get the property back on the tax rolls.
ECON acquired the ash landfill in 2006 and put a conservation easement on the property to ensure that it would remain closed and never used as a landfill, for ash or municipal solid waste. The site of the meeting has not been determined.
