M.J. Harrington’s Celebrate 65 Years

David Lantz, left, owner of MJ Harrington & Co. in Newport, chats with Bill Howell, a veteran of 45 years in the jewelry business with 11 of those years spent at the Newport store. M.J. Harrington will be celebrating 65 years as a family business with a special celebration Friday.

It isn’t often that members of the same family get to celebrate their 65th consecutive year in business but the Lantz family will be doing just that from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.
And don’t let the store name, M.J. Harrington & Co., fool you. Jewelers and Designers since 1948, this firm has been a vital part of the Newport’s downtown business community for every one of those 65 years.
Harrington’s, as Newport area shoppers commonly call it, made its initial appearance in 1948 when Michael J. Harrington purchased the business from Maurice J. Downing.
When Harrington retired in 1971, Jim Lantz purchased the business and sold it to two of his five sons, David and Jeff in 1992. In 1997, David became the sole owner, buying out Jeff. Story and photo from the Eagle Times.
