VT State Police Colonel Attends White House Meeting

LEsperanceVermont State Police Colonel Thomas L’Esperance joined senior law enforcement officials from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and former New York, Los Angeles, and Boston Police Chief Bill Bratton Wednesday at the White House, where they discussed strides made in securing US borders, immigration issues affecting local police forces, and the resultant need for comprehensive reform.
Col. L’Esperance and other front line law enforcement officials spoke of roles, responsibilities, concerns and impact of local police forces serving communities with immigrant populations.
“It’s important for the public to trust their police force and be able to call on them when needed; we do not want that trust undermined by fear,” L’Esperance said.
The sheriffs and chiefs had an opportunity to inform officials including Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, about the successes and challenges in their local jurisdictions and they were briefed on current policy and programs.
