Beer Tax Fails in House

NoBeerTaxThe Beer Tax bill sponsored by Democrat Representatives, Charles “Chuck” Weed of Keene and, Richard Eaton of Greenville NH beer tax met defeat on Wednesday in a 308-35 vote. The bill called for 10 cents a gallon, which would have brought the tax on wholesale beer up to 40-cent tax per gallon. Proponents wanted the $4.2 million expected revenue to go to Dept of Health and Human Services for Alcohol treatment.
A state law currently requires a portion of the profits on liquor sales go toward treatment, but lawmakers have been diverting the money to other state spending for years. Opponents said raising the tax would hurt small businesses, including small breweries that are growing in the state. In January Governor Maggie Hassen she would veto an increase in the beer tax.
