NH Receives $35 Million in Settlement from Two Major Oil Companies

Two of seven oil refineries that New Hampshire brought suit against in 2003 for groundwater contamination settled with the state, Attorney General Michael Delaney announced on Thursday.
Shell Oil Company and Sunoco, Inc. will pay $35M to settle pending claims against the refineries for producing gasoline containing methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE). The lawsuit claims that the refineries added MTBE to gasoline sold in New Hampshire knowing that it would contaminate ground water supplies.
The remaining defendants, Exxon/Mobil Corporation, Irving Oil Co., Citgo Petroleum, ConocoPhillips Co. and Vitol S.A are scheduled to go to trial in Concord on January 7, 2013.
