Claremont Fire Takes Barn and Damages Home

Thanks to off duty Claremont Firefighter Tim Vezina who lives across from the street from the Claremont residence whose barn caught fire at 36 Sugar River Road in Claremont. Vezina awakened the sleeping resident to alert her of the blaze that destroyed the barn on the property and starting to take hold of the home. She was able to leave with her dog.Vezina was awaken a loud explosion from the barn and saw the fire, he then called 911 and went to evacuate those inside.
Fire Chief Rick Bergeron said, the Claremont Fire Department was dispatched at 3:05 am and found the barn fully involved. Firefighters tried to keep the fire from reaching the kitchen ell.
Three engines were at the scene and firefighter had the blaze was under control by 4 am. Crews stayed on the scene hosing down the embers until shortly after 9:30 am on Monday morning. The homeowner Ellsworth Tate was at work in Lebanon NH, but his girlfriend was sleeping when the blaze began. Cause was a short in the old wiring in the barn. Cornish, Ascutney, Charlestown and Newport assisted Claremont on the fire.
