Rescuers Brave 70 MPH Winds To Rescue Hiker

NH Fish and Game, and AMC rescue teams’ braved winds sustained at 70 mph with gusts over 80 mph in torrential rains late Tuesday night to rescue an injured Michigan hiker from Franconia Notch. Edward Bacon, 58 of Northville, Michigan fell down and injured his hip Tuesday afternoon, and crawled to where cell service was available, before he could call 911 and AMC. . Teams reached him about 10:30 pm on Tuesday and used a litter to carry him down the 3.9 trail; they reached the trailhead just before 3:30 am, after fighting the rain, swollen rivers, and wind. Bacon was taken to Littleton Regional Hospital.
Fish and Game Lt. James Kneeland commended the heroic effort of the rescuers and noted that conditions change quickly in NH mountains and days are getting shorter. He advises hikers to visit www.hikesave.com to learn the ten essentials to have in your pack.
