Newport Experiencing Drought Conditions

Newport is experiencing drought conditions, and the town has begun the first phase of its water conservation program according to Robert K. Naylor, Superintendent of Newport’s and Water and Sewer Department. All nonessential water use is prohibited for Town use, which includes washing of Town vehicles, irrigation of Town property and Fire Department training involving water use. In a memo, Naylor stated that 2012 is the driest year on record in recent years and that ground water and lake water levels are declining. Paul Brown, Newport’s Town Manager noted that Gillman pond is 3 feet lower than usual and asks residents of Newport to voluntary conserve water.
