The Black River Action Team (BRAT) of Springfield Vt. removed 1,000 pounds of scrap metal between Springfield, Ludlow, and Weathersfield and garbage that filled 75 trash bags during the Annual Sweep of the Black River on Saturday. Among the odd items recovered were 19 shopping carts, a television, lawn chairs, coils of wire, a fire extinguisher, canopy frame, and a plastic traffic barrier. BRAT is a grassroots organization driven by volunteers and community support. This year 90 volunteers helped with the task. The group began in cleaning the banks of the Black River in 2000.
