Claremont Firefighters Battle Multi-Alarm Blaze

Claremont firefighters called in mutual aid from their neighbors in VT and NH to battle a blaze at 196 Sullivan Street on Tuesday. Officials say the fire started on the first floor and crews struggled through intense heat and smoke to control the initial room fire but the fire reached the exterior through the opened windows and then traveled to the roof overhangs on the third floor.
Engines from Newport, Cornish, Windsor and Ascutney assisted Claremont Fire Department. Additional ladder companies were dispatched from Newport NH and Springfield VT.
The NH Red Cross is assisting the tenants from the two more severely affected apartments. The owner, Diane Walker, occupied the third apartment. There were no reported injuries and several pets were removed to safety by firefighters, but a pet rabbit did not survive.
