57 Million Dollars Await Claim from Vermonters

Vermont State Treasurer Beth Pearce announced Tuesday that $8 million in new unclaimed financial property was received by the State Treasurer’s Office since July 1, 2011. Bringing the state’s amount of unclaimed property to $57 million dollars.
Among the largest receipt of funds, this fiscal year was a breakthrough agreement with national insurance giant John Hancock. Since October, Hancock turned over $823,000 in unclaimed life insurance and annuity contracts.
There is no time limit to file a claim. In addition to the Free State web site search, national searches also are free through the missing money system supported by State Treasurers nationwide at www.missingmoney.com or call Vermont’s Unclaimed Property Division (802)828-2407 or toll-free in Vermont at 1-800-642-3191.
